Sometimes we get it wrong, right?
The spreadsheet used to tally results at the Republican Party of Virginia produced the following result — and social media went ecstatic:
Of course, we double checked the spreadsheet and dutifully reported to our friends, with one small problem.
There was a spreadsheet error.
From RPV Chairman Rich Anderson who helpfully explained what was going on:
Shaun,
I just determined what happened here. One of our data entry people accidentally put a number in an incorrect cell. With formulas preset, it did a computation and pushed those computations out to round four. Round four has not happened yet because we are currently in round two. That was corrected earlier (we have redundancy checks in place), so the data you now see on the feed is correct.

So it was an incorrect cell. Another friend there said it was a test that just never was corrected, so there’s that as well.
But that explains all the hubbub.
Sears’ campaign was thankful for the time machine results and hopes we can retransmit in six hours.
Davis’ campaign scolded me gently to remind me that we should look once and verify twice. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. But everyone is taking things in great stride on a Tuesday afternoon.
I’d feel worse if the results were still coming in. But as the results already being in? Well, how many times do you find anyone in the media say they got it wrong?
Mea culpa, folks.
